Ultraviolet upconversion fluorescence band (260–350 nm) has been observed from Pr3+:Y2SiO5 pumped by Ar+ ion laser (488 nm). Power dependence of the fluorescence emitted from 4f5d, 3P0 and 1D2 were measured. The upconversion mechanism was analyzed using the rate equations with a simplified three level model. It appears that excited state absorption (ESA) is the dominant upconversion process for lower Pr3+ concentration and energy transfer upconversion (ETU) is dominant for higher Pr3+ concentration.
